Mumbai: The first day of the law examinations conducted by the University of Mumbai (MU) saw confusion in most city colleges as the answer papers had a separate column for the students’ names.

Generally, mentioning one’s name on answer papers is forbidden in centralised exams. However, starting this year, apart from for the TYBCom examinations, every answer paper had a column where students had to mention their full name. Earlier, the only column was for seat numbers or hall ticket numbers, which is scanned during assessment.

On the first day of the LLB exam, which started at 10.30 am on Thursday, students were confused. At the Government Law College at Churchgate, the supervisor at the exa-mination hall asked the students not to mention t-heir name while students were asked to mention th-eir name at Rizvi Law college and GJ Advani Law College.

“We did not need to write our name for the past three years, but out of nowhere, the examiner told us to write our name. Most of us did not write it, however, because technically it is against the rules as it’s like tipping off the assessor,” a student said. Another student has sent a letter to MU to issue a circular to clarify the matter.

Vinod Malale, deputy registrar, examination de-partment, said, “Mentio-ning the name is compl-etely optional, but writing the hall ticket or seat number is mandatory. In any case, none of the student’s information can re-ach the teacher or assessor as the first page (whe-re all this information is written) is scanned, separated from the booklet and stored in the system of the University. All the assessors do is assess the papers.”
