Mumbai: The driver of app-based fleet taxi service Uber allegedly molested a woman in her thirties in Andheri on Friday.

The woman was in an Uber cab when she noticed the driver allegedly masturbating while the taxi was waiting at a signal in Seepz area. The woman panicked and alighted from the cab and confronted the driver, asking him to cancel the ride. The driver, however, demanded the fare amount. The woman threw currency notes and left. Vinayak Deshmukh, deputy commissioner of police, holding additional charge of zone X of Mumbai, said, “We have contacted the woman and are looking into the incident.” The woman has reportedly given an oral statement to the police on the phone and will approach the MIDC police station in Andheri on Saturday to give a detailed statement and register an FIR.

Uber issued a statement on Friday that stated, “What’s been described has no place on our app. Our community guidelines clearly reject such inappropriate behaviour. Upon learning about the incident, we immediately removed the driver partner’s access to the app.

Meanwhile, in another molestation case, a 24-year-old man allegedly exposed himself to two teenage girls in Dindoshi late on Thursday, while the duo was chatting with their male friend in Goregaon (east).

The girls had then raised an alarm after which locals and some of her friends chased down the accused, Salman Khan, and handed him over to the Dindoshi police. A case of molestation and outraging modesty has been registered against Khan. The officials said that Khan, a labourer who resides at Sanjay Nagar in Kurar village in Malad (east), was relieving himself at a distance from where the girls were talking to their friend on the service road next to the Western Express Highway, near a hotel.

Khan was handed over to the police soon after the incident took place. The case was registered against Khan under section 509 (outraging modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.  He was produced before a magistrate court on Friday and was remanded in judicial custody. The police is trying to establish if there are any past cases against him.
