Two cops held for cheating businessman
Police sources said the crime was allegedly planned by one Devidas Ghade, who is deployed as an inspector in special unit.
Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai crime branch has arrested two local policemen — a head constable and an inspector — and a property agent for allegedly cheating a Mumbai-based businessman.
According to police officers, on November 12, at a time the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes stood demonetised, the businessman met a middleman asking for his help in changing his old currencies with the face value of Rs 46 lakh. The middleman invited the businessman to Khandeshawar in Navi Mumbai to get his notes exchanged with new ones. As per plan however, the two accused police officers conducted a fake raid there, seizing the old notes and also asking the businessman to pay more as he had “black money.” The victim then lodged a complaint with the police and the duo was arrested on Sunday.
Police sources said the crime was allegedly planned by one Devidas Ghade, who is deployed as an inspector in special unit. The sources said along with him one Shaym Patil, a head constable attached with CBD police station, was also involved in the crime.
According to police officials, a middle agent identified as Kale played an active role in the crime and on Sunday the crime branch unit of the Mumbai police arrested him along with Patil and Ghade after a detailed investigation of the case.
A senior police officer from Navi Mumbai crime branch told The Asian Age that the businessman, whose name is being withheld by the police, wanted to convert his currency, for which he asked the agent to help him out. The agent made him come to Khandeshawar area and when he reached the spot, inspector Ghode raided the spot and seized the money the businessman was carrying.
The inspector allegedly threatened the businessman and asked him to give more money. When the inspector again allegedly demanded money from the businessman, the victim realised they were cheating him, and approached the commissioner’s office to help him. Acting on the businessman’s complaint, the CP’s office ordered the crime branch to conduct an investigation in the matter.
