All Mumbai police stations to get own cyber crime cell

Mumbai: In a bid to cut down on cyber crimes, each Mumbai police station will have a separate cyber cell to deal with cyber crime complaints. The move comes after a spike in the number of cyber crimes reported in the city.

According to the 2016 NCRB data, Mumbai has reported maximum number of cases under cyber crime (980 cases out of 4,172 cases) accounting to 23.5 per cent

According to the Cyber Cell of Mumbai police, in every police station, three police officers and three constables will look into the cases related to cyber crime, which will help increase the detection rate of cyber crime. The police constables and officers will undergo training for five days at Mumbai’s cyber cell headquarters, Bandra Kurla Complex.

Akbar Pathan, deputy commissioner of police (Cyber Crime) said, “At the end of the training, the police will be equipped to register and investigate the various types of cyber crimes, use various applications and refer them to the general public to increase the awareness. These trained police officers will be following the standard operating procedure (SOP), which will help them crack down more cases related to cyber crime.”

The cops will be given a tablet that will have the latest applications and software, to help detect the cyber crime. The cyber police have also come up with a help line number 9820810007 where people can call up to report the cyber crime.
