New constructions in Thane stayed till June due to water shortage

Mumbai: The Bombay high court on Friday has stayed new construction work in Ghodbandar area near Thane due to inadequate water supply in the area. The high court directed the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) to not issue any new Occupation Certificate (OC) and Commencement Certificate (CC) till further orders are issued. “Construction activities can be put on hold, but water must be provided to all human beings,” the court observed while hearing the petition.

A division bench of Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice Girish Kulkarni was hearing a petition filed by Mangesh Shelar, a resident of Runwal Estate along Ghodbandar Road. Mr Shelar had approached high court last year. He stated that abrupt and frequent water cut are taking place in his area. According to the petition, some times water cut stretched for 48 hours, and it is happening because the lack of planning on the part of municipal commissioner.

The high court observed that construction activity consumes more water than domestic work. The high court also stated that other districts of the state are also facing water shortage and Municipal Corporation cannot evade its responsibility.

The high court has kept the matter for further hearing on June 9.
