Heavy rainfall predicted in Mumbai from June 8 to 10

There are predictions of heavy rainfall similar to that of 26 July 2005, which had brought the city to a standstill.

There is a 17 per cent chance of deficient rainfall and only two per cent possibility of excess rainfall, the department added.

Mumbai: As Mumbai braces up for monsoon with a few pre-monsoon showers, Skymet Weather — a private weather forecasting agency known for accurate predictions has stated that the city may witness intense rainfall after June 6.

There are predictions of heavy rainfall similar to that of 26 July 2005, which had brought the city to a standstill. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that the intensity of rain will further increase on June 8 leading to very heavy spells.

Jatin Singh, chief executive officer at Skymet Weather tweeted, “The period between June 6 and June 12 could be the worse spell since July 26 2005, when Mumbai recorded 900mm of rainfall in a day.”

Mahesh Palawat, vice president of Skymet Weather said, “The weather conditions can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation that was persisting over South Konkan and Goa region. As the system are still prevailing, we expect Mumbai to record good spell in coming days.”

According to Skymet weather, the average monthly rainfall for Mumbai stands at 493.1mm and till date, the city has already recorded 77.3 mm of rains.

Within the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Monday, Mumbai's Santacruz Observatory recorded 51mm of good rains, whereas Colaba Observatory witnessed 15mm of rainfall. As per IMD, monsoon will most likely reach Maharashtra and Goa in the next two days. The downpour is likely to aggravate between June 8 and June 10 in over the western coast, including Mumbai.

Owing to the pre-monsoon showers in the city, the air quality improved remarkably on Tuesday with the Air Quality Index recorded as 41, which comes under ‘good’ category.
