Congress-NCP alliance talks under way'

Pawar spoke about a larger alliance with parties such as the Congress, Peasants and Workers Party, Republican Party.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan has clarified that talks of an alliance between the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the state are under way. He also said that efforts are on to take 10 parties together ahead of the general and Assembly elections in 2019. His statement came after NCP chief Sharad Pawar said that an alliance between both Congresses and other parties will be forged in the next few days.

Mr Chavan said, “We are already talking about an alliance with the NCP. It is already decided that there will be an alliance with them. So, seat sharing and other issues will be cleared soon.” Just last week, he had met Congress president Rahul Gandhi and the new in-charge of the Maharashtra Congress in Delhi.

“We are trying to bring ten parties together in Maharashtra. This is a battle to save democracy and all like-minded parties are in a mood to come together. So in Maharashtra, we will try to raise this larger alliance,” Mr Chavan said.

Recently, Mr Pawar spoke about a larger alliance with parties such as the Congress, Peasants and Workers Party, Republican Party.
