Give 80 per cent jobs to locals or lose incentives: Subhash Desai

Mumbai: Industry minister Subhash Desai has asked industries in Maharash-tra to give 80 per cent jobs to local youths. Mr Desai warned that a failure to comply would result in the stoppage of incentives. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has issued instructions for the setting up of a joint monitoring cell of industry and labour department at state level to check implementation of this policy. “We are thinking of making provisions for punishment also,” Mr Desai added.

Recently, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) started agitations against hawkers and attacked a couple of ‘hawkers from outside the state’.

As per the government’s policy, it is binding to give 80 per cent jobs to local youths or those with domicile of the state. But no one ever implemented this and successive governments also never took it seriously. Mr Desai pointed out this issue in the cabinet meeting on Tuesday at the time of labour department’s
presentation.

The chief minister promptly asked both the departments to set up a monitoring cell.

The state government started an incentive scheme in 1964 to establish new industries in the state. The state provides financial assistance up to 5-7 years. Currently, 25,000 industries are operational in the state, of which 19,000 are MSME (micro medium and small scale). The state has spent Rs 2,500 crore on incentives and same provision is made for this year. “The demand is very high this year. We need at least Rs 4,000 crore.

We will make this provision in supplementary demands,” said an official from the industry department.
