Over 300 CCTV cameras to be installed at Kalina campus

MUMBAI: Over 300 CCTV cameras will be installed at the Kalina campus of Mumbai University (MU) within two months. The plan has been put on priority after a postgraduate student was molested by an unidentified person inside the campus a couple of months ago.
As per the blueprint of the plan, every department has been given '1 lakh for installation of CCTV cameras at their entry and exit gates, washroom entrances, canteens etc. This apart, CCTV cameras are to be installed at the most crowded as well as isolated spots on campus, including the ladies hostel.
Furthermore, the heads of department (HoDs) will be given access to the CCTV footage on a continuous basis by installing computer screens inside their cabins. “The HoD can see the footage all the time; this way, he or she can closely observe whatever is happening in and near the department.
The footage of all CCTVs will be scrutinised in the control room, which will be inside the security department in the campus.
Special on-duty personnel will always be present for surveillance," said Dr Supriya Karande, a senate member and official in charge looking after installation of CCTV
cameras.
The control room will follow the Maharashtra Police Act when it comes to inspecting and storing the CCTV footage. According to her, as of now, the online programme is complete and within eight days, the tendering process for the project will be completed, too.
In the blueprint, the officials have chalked out certain spots on campus. As of now, Ranade Bhavan, examination house, the economics and nano-science departments already have CCTV facility.
The next target now is the ladies hostel as students have complained about how isolated it is and unsafe at night.
