Mumbai: In an attempt towards a more effective way of noise monitoring, the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) along with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board is going to conduct real time mapping of noise levels at 1,500 points in Mumbai. To do so, the volunteers will be riding bicycles to record the sound levels.

“We have decided to cover at least 1,500 points in the city on bicycles. It is an eco-friendly way and will also reduce the additional noise levels that would have emanated from our vehicle. We have chosen major noise emanating spots like traffic junctions, schools, hospitals, temples and cross-sections,” said Ritesh Vijay, principal scientist, Centre for Strategic Urban Management, NEERI.

The initiative was conducted in Nagpur last month and is presently being carried out in Navi Mumbai. It will soon be launched at Kalyan-Dombivali and Thane. “We will be recording noise levels per second by staying at a spot for five minutes,” he added.
