Lift squishes girl's head
Bandra girl, 12, was checking on it when it landed on her.
Mumbai: A 12-year-old minor girl died after getting hit by a lift, which was on its way down from the sixth floor of Aashiyana Apartments in Bandra east late on Friday night. The deceased, Kunot Zaveri (12) was waiting for the lift with her aunt when she put her head in the gap of the grill to see when the lift was to arrive. But the lift had already come down before she could pull her head out, thereby killing the girl. Nirmal Nagar police has registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in the case.
According to officials, the accident took place late at 11.15 pm on Friday night. Zaveri was immediately rushed to the civic-run Sion Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival due to profuse bleeding. The police said that the floor, which she lived on, had a gap in the grill of the lift shaft, due to which Zaveri was able to put her head inside it.
Vasudev Jamdade, senior police inspector of Nirmal Nagar police station said, “The lift had a proper license to function in a building and we have registered an ADR. We will look into the matter and see if negligence was involved. We are going to question the society as to why the lift was working in spite of the gap in the grill. If we find any negligence, we will tackle the case accordingly.”
The girl’s parents are in shock and her last rites were performed on Saturday. The police is yet to record statements of Zaveri’s parents and her aunt who was present at the time of the accident.
