Mumbai: Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam has raised objection to his movements being allegedly restricted by police officials in the wake of BJP national president Amit Shah’s Mumbai visit. The Congress alleged that Mr Nirupam and many other party workers were kept under “house arrest” owing to Mr Shah’s visit, and condemned the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government for such action.

Mr Nirupam was kept under house arrest and police personnel deployed outside his home at Lokhandwala Complex, Andheri, since Wednesday morning. The police asked him not to step out as it feared that he, along with other Congress workers, might protest before Mr Shah during the latter’s meetings with important personalities in the city.

Mr Nirupam alleged that chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had directed the police to keep Congress leaders under house arrest. The CM feared that Congress leaders may agitate before or question Mr Shah. When Mr Nirupam saw police personnel outside his home, he inquired with them and the officers revealed the reason to him.

Mr Nirupam and the Congress have slammed the corrupt BJP-Shiv Sena government for putting opposition leaders under pressure; and the CM for using police force against Congress leaders and to protect Mr Shah, who is an “accused”. Mr Nirupam said that they were surprised that despite not having planned any agitation, the government was scared the party would do so.
