Mumbai: A 50-year-old grandmother, Abida Shaikh, resident of Mumbra was arrested on Thursday for allegedly kidnapping her two-year-old granddaughter. Shaikh feared that after her son and daughter-in-law seperate, the latter would be unable to look after the child.

According to officials, Shaikh (50) had visited her daughter-in law’s house in Govandi. “She kept an eye on the her daughter-in-law’s house to kidnap her granddaughter. In the afternoon, when her daughter-in law went to her neighbour’s place keeping her girl with other children in the society, Shaikh saw it as an opportunity and kidnapped the child. As she was clad in a burqa, children could not see her face.”

Assistant police inspector, Nitin Chauhan, who is investigating the case, said, “The child’s mother made the complaint. She said that she suspects her in-laws involvement in this case. While we interrogated Abida, she refuted the allegation, so we alerted our informers to keep an eye on her.

We later found out that Abida had asked her 27-year-old daughter, Alkama Shaikh to keep the child with her and stay outside in the hotel based in Thane.”

The police has arrested Abida and Alkama under several IPC sections.
