FYJC students allege bias against Non-Mumbaikars students

MUMBAI: A few students from Badlapur, Kasara, Kalyan, Dombivali, Kalwa and Thane looking to be admitted to first year junior college (FYJC) have alleged that colleges in central and western suburbs prefer students from that locality, making it difficult for them to get admission in city colleges.

Sonali Deshpande (name changed), a student from Dombivali, told The Asian Age, “Two colleges in Ghatkopar told me and my mom to try and choose colleges in our area so that they had seats left for students in their area. We had gone to ask about the cut-off and vacant seats in these colleges after the third list.”

Rahul Jain (name changed), a student from Titwala, has been trying to secure admission in a Vile Parle-based college popular for its commerce stream. “It was my dream to get in there. But maybe because I come from the Kasara side, the way the college and its officials spoke to me was very disheartening. Even after scoring 79.36 per cent, I don’t think I’ll be able to make it to any Mumbai college.”

Sukhi Singh, another student from Kalwa who has been trying to get admission in south Mumbai colleges, told this newspaper, “I scored 86.78 per cent and thought that at least in the third list, I would make it to any college in Churchgate or Charni Road. Unfortunately, my name did not appear anywhere. My parents later suggested that I change my preference to colleges in Dadar, Matunga and Sion.”

4th general merit list

The fourth general merit list of the FYJC admissions will be announced today (August 7) on the official website of the state education department.
