FDA cracks down on puri-making units at Dahisar

FDA officials found that the puri manufacturing units functioned out of dingy, smelly rooms in the slums.

Officials of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) carried out surprise inspection of a few street joints, juice bars and ice-cream parlours in the city to examine the food being served to people during the summer season.

Mumbai: The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) raided Om Sai Foods Company, Dahisar (west), where puris (for pani puri) were being manufactured in filthy conditions using low-quality ingredients.

FDA officials found that the puri manufacturing units functioned out of dingy, smelly rooms in the slums.

Shailesh Adhav, FDA joint commissioner (food), said, “Hygiene standards were completely absent and the working conditions were worse. These units did not even have exhaust fans.”
