FYJC admissions: 1 lakh still not allotted seats

MUMBAI: Over 1 lakh students are still without a seat even after four general merit lists being declared for the first year junior colleges (FYJC) admissions, revealed sources close to the state education department. At the same time, nearly 1.9 lakh seats are still vacant in the city and suburban colleges.

On Tuesday, the fourth list was declared where 49,062 students were allotted seats while over 32,001 students could not get a single college. The overall applicants for the fourth list were 81,063. Out of the total applicants, 3,671 students are from the Arts stream, 32,109 for Commerce, 12,773 for Science and 509 for MCVC stream. Nearly 15,000 students got colleges as per their first preferred college, whereas 8,282 students got as per their second preference of colleges in this list.

Rajendra Ahire, deputy director of education, Mumbai division said that students who haven’t got into any colleges need not to worry as over 1 lakh seats are lying vacant in colleges which can be acquired by them through the special rounds. “The vacant seats under the minority quota in the colleges too will be transferred soon to the general open quota. Totalling the remaining seats and minority quota seats, students would get more choice in seats,” Mr. Ahire said.

This year, the total vacant seats were around 2.97 lakh and the number of students registered was 2.40 lakh.  With four rounds, nearly 1.5 lakh students have been successfully allotted seats in colleges while another set of 1 lakh students are yet to get a seat.

Generally, after the four mandatory merit lists one special round is announced. But this year as large numbers of students are yet to be allotted seats, the officials are planning to introduce two special rounds after the fourth round. The dates and details of the special rounds will be announced on the official website of the FYJC admissions by August 10.
