Tempo rams into 4 teenagers, kills one in Malvani

The tempo driver fled the spot after the fatal accident and is still at large.

Mumbai: A tempo ran over four children, killing one in Malvani on Tuesday morning. After the tempo driver lost control of the steering wheel, he bumped into an auto rickshaw and then rammed into the children. The tempo driver fled the spot after the fatal accident and is still at large.

The deceased, Muskaan Memon (13) was walking with three others identified as Neha Menali (13) and her brothers Bhupendra (9) and Kamal (12). Menali and her siblings, who sustained injuries in the accident, were rushed to the private-run Atlantis Hospital and were later transferred to civic-run KEM Hospital. The Malvani police has registered a case against the absconding driver.

The accident took place at 8 am on Tuesday morning. The four children, residents of Malvani area, decided to bunk their school and take a stroll near the beach. When they were on their way to the beach, a tempo truck registered with number MH04HQ0702 rammed into a parked auto rickshaw near the Jarimari Mata Mandir, and subsequently, ran over the four children. The deceased Muskan Memon was directly hit and died on the spot, while the Menali and her siblings sustained injuries.

An eyewitness, Sabeer Ahmed (24) said, “The accident took place within a fraction of minutes, and everyone was stunned. The four children were immediately rushed to the private-run Atlantis Hospital, where Muskaan was declared dead on arrival, while the other three kids were admitted for treatment.”

Deepak Phatangare, a senior police inspector of Malvani police station, said, “The owner of the tempo has been arrested, while we are on the lookout for the driver. The driver hails from Uttar Pradesh, and we have sent a team to the local address he provided to his boss.”

The deceased’s body was sent to civic-run Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali, where a post-mortem will be conducted. The police has booked the absconding driver under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

A relative of Muskaan said, “Her parents are shocked as she was their only daughter.” One of the survivors, Bhupendra (9) is a cancer patient and was in a state of shock.
