Malegaon blast accused alleges torture, court orders test

Mumbai: Manohar Narwaria, an accused in 2006 Malegaon bomb blast case, was produced before a special MCOCA court on Wednesday after his lawyer complained to the court that Arthur Road jail officials had allegedly beat him up mercilessly. After recording Narwaria’s statement, the special court has directed jail authorities to get an independent medical test done and submit the report in court in a sealed condition.

Narwaria lawyer, Prashant Maggu, had approached the court on December 2, after his client sent him a message via an accused who was produced before a court in another case, saying that the jail authorities had beaten him badly.

After receiving his message, Mr Maggu met Narwaria in jail the next day where they came to know that though he was in a bad condition due to the alleged beating, he still had not been given any medical treatment. The next day was Sunday and hence Mr Maggu approached the MCOCA court on Monday and requested the court to direct the jail authorities to bring Narwaria before the court and examine his condition personally.

According to sources, the jail authorities had allegedly beaten Narwaria after he got into an altercation with them. In the meantime, the authorities took Narwaria to Sir JJ Hospital where it was revealed that both his hands were fractured and he had a limp in his right leg. Since Narwaria was not produced before the court till Wednesday, the court directed the Arthur Road Jail authorities to produce him via video conferencing.
