Green activists want government to book violators
Waste management experts have also highlighted the need to implement the solid waste management (SWM) rules 2016 effectively.
Mumbai: Environmentalists asserted that although the move is appreciable, the government should bring up stricter regulations unlike the last time.
They have contended that heaps of plastic end up in the sea, which has proved to be detrimental for the marine life of the city.
Pradip Patade, a marine activist who conducts marine walks every week said, “Plastic ban is a good move as marine animals are suffocating due to plastic and micro-plastic.”
He added, “It takes years to decay and accumulates at the bottom of the sea. Almost every time I visit the coastal areas, I find fishermen getting sludge of garbage more than fish in their nets.”
Waste management experts have also highlighted the need to implement the solid waste management (SWM) rules 2016 effectively.
Rishi Aggarwal, an expert on waste management issues said, “Banning plastic bags is not the sole solution. The SWM rules has laid directions on the disposal of items that are packaged or laminated in plastic. ‘
