5 held over firing at Govandi cafe

According to the police, the incident was triggered due to a deal gone wrong between two parties.

Mumbai: A firing incident was reported at 2.15 am on Friday, at Hotel Orange Mint Café in Govandi when Jatin Ahuja, a resident of Navi Mumbai, had opened fire at victims Rakesh Sonawane and Shweta Pande, both residents of Sion-Koliwada. The duo escaped unhurt.

According to the police officials, the firing incident was triggered due to a deal gone wrong between the two parties. As per the statement given by Ahuja, both Sonawane and Pande had purchased a second hand car from him but were not paying as per the agreed schedule.

Further, late on Thursday, the accused came to know that both the victims were celebrating a birthday at the mentioned café in Govandi.

The arrested accused have been identified as Jatin Ahuja (33), his wife Praveena (32), Rahul Bhosale (21), Ashfaq Akhtar (30) and Rashid Shaikh (30).

Senior Inspector Shahsikant Pawar said, “After reaching the hotel, Ahuja fired first round in air as soon as he came out of his car. Subsequently he went upstairs to the party hall where he fired another round aiming at Rakesh and Shweta.”

The police has booked the five accused under sections 307, 336, 353, 143, 147, 148 and 149 of the Indian Penal Code — which deal with attempt to murder,  act endangering life or personal safety of others, assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty, unlawful assembly, rioting, rioting armed with deadly weapon and every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object respectively —   read with Section 3 and 25 of Arms Act on the complaint of Ms Pande at Govandi police station.
