Mumbai: Only 77.10 per cent of students passed the Class 10 exam, the results of which were announced by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHE) on Saturday afternoon. While the overall pass percentage saw a 12.31 per cent dip from last year's figure, girls outshone the boys this year too as 82.82 per cent of them cleared the exam compared to 72.18 per cent of boys. Also, 20 students across the state have scored 100 per cent marks.

This year, over 16 lakh students appeared for the SSC examination, which was conducted from March 1 to March 22. Candidates who did not clear the exam can appear for their supplementary tests to be held in the month of July.

The Maharashtra board has nine divisions, which are located at Pune, Mumbai, Nashik, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Latur, Amravati and the Konkan. Following the previous year's trend, the Konkan division has topped the state with the highest passing percentage — 88.38 per cent while the Nagpur division stood lowest with only 67.27 per cent of students clearing the exam. The Pune, Mumbai, Kolhapur, Aurangabad and Amravati divisions have recorded passing percentages of 82.48, 77.04, 86.58, 75.20 and 71.98 per cent respectively.

Mumbai division, which also includes Thane, Raigad and Palghar, saw a 13.36 per cent dip as it had recorded a pass percentage of 90.41 per cent last year.

Speaking about the Class 10 results, MSBSHE chairperson Shakuntala Kale said, “A total of 16.18 lakh students had taken the exam of which 12.47 lakh students passed.” Ms Kale said the low results could be due to the change in the exam pattern and emphasis on comprehensive understanding. Those mugging up answers may have failed to do well, she said. This year, students from 22,246 schools  had appeared for SSC exam of which 1,794 schools have got a 100 per cent passing result.

Don’t worry about fall in passing percentage: Vinod Tawde

Vinod Tawde

Reacting to the 12.31 per cent drop in the overall passing percentage of students who took the SCC exam, education minister Vinod Tawde said it the examination afforded students an opportunity to come to know their true aptitude.

“Till 2007, there was no 10-mark internal assessment (for languages) as it was introduced in 2008 and continued till 2018. For the exam of 2019, the 20-mark orals for languages were scrapped so the excessive marks came down,” Mr Tawde stated.

Mr Tawde also urged parents not to worry about the decline in the overall passing percentage.

“It was a trend that the passing percentage was rising year by year. I have spoken to education experts and they said there is no cause of worry,” he said.

The minister also said that this is an opportunity for students to choose their careers wisely while who have not cleared the exam could work hard to pass the re-examination.

Out of over 16 lakh students who appeared for the exam, as many as 77.10 per cent students cleared the exam.

This was the first time when the exams were held after the state board revised the syllabus and scrapped orals for languages and social sciences.
