Government gives way to Balasaheb memorial, de-reserves house
The change was done after a committee appointed to build the memorial had sent a proposal to the government.
Mumbai: The urban development department, in a bid to give a boost to the construction of the memorial to late Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray, on Friday altered the green zone reservation of the mayor’s bungalow at Dadar.
The change was done after a committee appointed to build the memorial had sent a proposal to the government.
A notice issued by the department on the subject read, “The government orders were issued for altering the ‘green area’ reservation of plot number CS 501 and 502 (part) of Mahim Division to “Grand Memorial of Swargiya Balasaheb Thakare (sic).”
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s Improvement’s Committee had, on March 24, 2017, communicated to the state its decision to give sanctions to plans to construct a memorial in an area of approximately 12,928 square metres.
“The state government formed a trust comprising chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray which has given the land on lease for 30 years. The said change has been made after the committee’s proposal,” said an official from the urban development department.
The land also falls under the coastal regulation zone and the CM had said that the government would seek the requisite permissions from the Centre.
The government notification and change to the development plan of the “G/N ward” has come under section 37 (1AA) of the Maharashtra Regional & Town Planning Act (MRTP). It has also invited suggestions and objection from the people on the changes in reservation, officials said.
