MU result mess: 30,000 answer sheets assessed physically
Apart from engineering, a few pharmacy and technology papers too were checked by way.
Mumbai: Around 30,000 to 35,000 answer sheets were assessed ‘physically’ this year despite the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Mumbai (MU), Sanjay Deshmukh, clearly announcing in the month of April that all the 17 lakh answer sheet of the final year degree students will be assessed through ‘On-Screen Marking’, an online method of assessment.
An MU official revealed that the assessors had checked the engineering drawing papers by hand as the sheets were too big for the scanning and uploading process and couldn’t even be scanned properly. “The engineering paper requires the students to use a pencil to make the drawings. This makes it difficult for the system to scan the different elements on the page for assessment,” explained a senior engineering professor.
Apart from engineering, a few pharmacy and technology papers too were checked by way. “Some answer sheets had to be assessed physically to save time that would have been spent in scanning and uploading the sheets. It was the only option to ensure timely declaration of the results,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
“While scanning the answer sheets for online assessment, only a fixed size of paper can be inserted into the machine with ease and it has to be done properly, for which we were not given proper training,” he added.
