Rights strengthen democracy, says Chief Justice

Mumbai: Chief Justice (CJI) of the Supreme Court Dipak Misra on Saturday said that the rights granted by the Constitution are necessary for the strengthening of democracy. He was speaking in the inauguration programme of Patangrao Kadam Smriti Prabhodan lecture at Dhanakwadi educational complex, Katraj in Pune.

Mr Misra praised the democratic system of the country. He conducted a comprehensive analysis of fundamental rights and freedom. “We live in a democratic system and free society. We must be aware of the rights of each other in the nature of democracy. Our democracy is protected by the concept of the ‘State of Justice’. If this concept collapses, then ‘the State of the Law’ will also collapse,” he said.

Mr Misra further said that the dream is not fulfilled without ambition. He said “In 1964, Patangrao Kadam dreamt to bring in high quality education in the rural areas, and he struggled for the same all his life.”

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Supreme Court judge Ajay Khanvilkar, acting chief iustice of Mumbai high court Naresh Patil, vice chancellor of Bharati Vidyapeeth  University, Dr. Shivajirao Kadam, vice chancellor of the University Dr. Manikrao Salunkhe,  Karyavah    of Bharati University and pro. vice-chancellor of University Vishwajit Kadam, dean and principal Dr. Mukund Sarda were present at the program. New Law College in Pune, law center extended room-2 and international arbitration center were inaugurated by Mr Mishra at the same program.
