Mumbai sees nine fires within 24 hours

Mumbai: The spate of incidents of fire continued unabated on Tuesday, with the city witnessing up to nine such occurrences within a span of 24 hours. However, none of the fires were major and there were no casualties.

A fire broke out at Dockyard Road, gutting seven shops and setting off a chain of similar such incidents elsewhere across Mumbai. The blaze started around 12.20 am in an iron workshop at Shukla Chawl, Jamalia building, and soon spread to nearby shops even as the fire brigade declared it a level II call. Six fire tenders and four jumbo water tankers were pressed into dousing the fire which was brought under control by 1.37am. The Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) fire station engine, too, was deployed for the fire-fighting operation. According to the officials, the fire spread to seven godowns and shops situated in the building.

Another fire broke out around 6.25am at Anugrah Hotel, Gokhale Road, Dadar. Officials said that a piece of cloth fell into an utensil kept on heat in the restaurant. Not only did the cloth catch fire, it was chucked into stacks of food grains, causing it to spread across the entire kitchen. No casualty was reported however.

At Juhu Tara Road, a minor fire erupted on the third floor of Suraj Cooperative Housing Society. However, firemen brought it under control immediately using four fire engines.

Minor fires were also reported at Dadar Phool Market, Bhuleshwar, Worli and Kandivali west. Around 5.37pm, a shop located at Amboli Naka on SV Road caught fire.
