Mahesh Murthy out on bail in molestation case
The Khar police had registered a complaint against him in January. He was arrested from his Bandra residence.
Mumbai: Mahesh Murthy, a well known Indian marketer and investor specialising in early-stage start-ups was arrested by Mumbai police in a molestation case registered against him by a Delhi-based women entrepreneur. He was released on anticipatory bail immediately on Friday.
The Khar police had registered a complaint against him in January. He was arrested from his Bandra residence.
According to the police, a Delhi based woman had written to the National Commission of Women (NCW) in November last year regarding the “usage of objectionable, derogatory, sexual remarks and obscene signs on social media,” allegedly sent by Murthy to her. The NCW then forwarded the complaint to the Director General of Police (DGP), Maharashtra. Upon receiving the complaint, a case was registered against Murthy on December 30 last year at Khar police station.
Murthy, the CEO and founder of digital agency, Pinstorm and managing partner of early-stage fund Seedfund, was arrested after the police found lewd messages sent by the accused to the complainant via Whatsapp messenger on December 25 last year.
“We have arrested him under sections 354 (D) (stalking) and 509 (word, act or gesture to outrage modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act,” said Ramchandra Jadhav, senior police inspector of Khar police station.
Paramjit Singh Dahiya, Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone 9 confirmed the arrest, but refused to comment saying that the investigation is underway. The arrested accused will be produced in court on Saturday.
