Mumbai: The medical students of civic-run Sion hospital Thursday silently protested the newly introduced socially and economically backward class (SEBC) and economically backward class (EBS) reservations by the government which leave only four per cent post-graduate (PG) seats for merit students who have given the NEET PG and opted to seek admissions through the state quota.

The medicos have named the protest the ‘murder of merit’, and doctors who have completed their MBBS and want to enroll for post-graduation are coming out in multitudes to join it.

Dr Sudarsh Iyengar said, “We are not against the reservation system. But while giving reservation, the government should think about all the sides involved. There are very limited seats for post-graduation. And due to the reservation, the seats, which are available for open category students, are only 4 per cent. The reservation will impact 50-60 per cent of the students.”

“If no one pays heed to our demands, we will organise a candle march in Bandra,” he added.

The senior officials at the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) said, “We are aware of their protest but we can’t go against the rules and law. The matter is with the court so let the court decide what should be done in this regard,” said a senior official.
