How will you map noise: HC asks MPCB
He added that construction of Metro is in larger public interest.
Mumbai: The Bombay high court has asked the concerned officer of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to remain present in the court on Wednesday and state how it plans to measure the noise level of the Cuffe Parade area at night. Further, state government informed the court that along with the email address, state will also provide toll free numbers where people can register their complaints against Metro noise pollution at Cuffe Parade.
A division bench of Justices Abhay Oka and Riyaz Chagala was hearing an application of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) wherein a request was made for conducting construction work at night time.
Advocate general Ashutosh Kumbhakoni reiterated that noise pollution rules and Environment Protection Act do not apply to the Metro project. He added that construction of Metro is in larger public interest.
S.U. Kamdar, contractor of L and T Company informed the court that MMRCL and contractor have jointly inspected the area, and said that as per NEERI report sets maximum existing noise at 61 decibel in the day and assured that construction noise will not exceed 71 decibel in the day.
The court decided to let MPCB map noise in Cuffe Parade, and wanted to know, how it plans to conduct it.
