Demand for Maratha reservation was made long back during the 1980's. Then Annasaheb Patil, leader of Mathadi Kamgar Union from various APMC markets was the prominent leader of this demand.

Mumbai: The opposition parties blamed the state government for the bandh and agitation, whereas the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tried to pacify the Maratha community by assuring them reservation by November 30, as the chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had recently announced.

The BJP state chief Raosaheb Danve said that the evidence of Marathas being part of Kunbi community, claimed to be identical to the ‘Kurmi’ caste  (socially backward class), is found in history and those will be used for the clearance of reservation.

Talking to the press in New Delhi, Mr Danve said, “The evidence of Maratha community being socially backward is found in Nizam government’s document. State will put this case before the court.”

However, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Opposition leader said “Marathas had 58 peacefully marches. But now they are on roads and the government have to be blamed for this.”
