Hospitals witness drop in firecracker-related injuries

The court temporarily banned the sale of firecrackers in last October. Earlier this week, however, the Supreme Court ordered a restricted use of firecrackers from 8 pm to 10 pm, considering the deadly pollution of Delhi and other cities.

Mumbai: Firecracker-related injuries in the city have witnessed a minor dip this Diwali. Five persons reported to state-run J.J. Hospital after suffering injuries due to firecrackers. Most of the people sustained these injuries Wednesday and Thursd-ay and among them, one minor girl suffered a serious eye injury.

Incidentally, most of the injured were bystanders and weren’t involved in bursting firecrackers. A doctor said that the bursting of crackers was in violation of the Supreme Court order restricting timings. One of the five patients at J.J. Hospital, a 35-year-old woman, sustained a one-degree burn injury on her right hand while bursting firecrackers.

The medical superintendent of the hospital, Dr Sanjay Surase, said that one of the five patients was treated for a serious eye injury. Rinky Puransingh (7) sustained an injury in her right eye while bursting firecrackers.

Eight-year-old Nikhil Yadav, 11-year-old Kaushik Rituraj Pande and 30-year-old Vanita Rathod sustained burn injuries on their right hands due to firecrackers while nine-year-old Naitik Chi-ntakindi sustained a one-degree burn injury on the right cheek.

The National Burns Centre in Navi Mumbai received no cases related to firecrackers during Diwali. According to Dr Sunil Keswani, director, tertiary burns centre near Mumbai, “People should WhatsApp a picture of the injury to the doctors manning that line so that they can suggest whether you should visit the centre immediately.”
