Mumbai: The Mumbai Congress staged a protest against the Modi government on the second anniversary of demonetisation. The party held a protest at Azad Maidan, Fort, Friday morning, which was part of its nationwide agitation.

During the protest, Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam made a controversial statement that after demonetisation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked to burn him alive if the situation did not return to normalcy within 50 days. Mr Nirupam said that now, the people of India would kill Mr Modi politically by defeating him in the 2019 elections.

“PM Modi had asked to burn him at any square if the decision of demonetisation went wrong. Now it has been proven that the decision was a disaster for the Indian economy. So, the people of India will hang him politically in the 2019 general elections by defeating him,” said Mr Nirupam. However, he was quick to clarify that this was a political and not physical statement.

“Almost 150 people died during demonetisation because they did not have any money with them. Mr Modi himself is not saying a word about demonetisation since the past one and a half year. What other proof do we need to show that the decision was wrong other than the fact that the decision maker is himself keeping quiet,” Mr Nirupam questioned.

Mr Nirupam also alleged that almost 25 lakh people lost their jobs due to demonetisation. “This decision was to harass poor people and help Mr Modi’s rich friends. The way he changed the current overnight, now, people should change the Prime Minister in 2019 in the same manner,” he appealed.
