Honour killing: Teen dies after brothers slit throat
According to the police, the two accused brothers, had repeatedly advised their sister against her relationship with the boy.
Mumbai: In what seems to be a case of honour killing, Jyoti Rajbhar (19), whose throat was slit by her elder brothers who disapproved of her alleged relationship with a boy, succumbed to her wounds at KEM Hospital, Parel, where she was admitted two days ago, on Thursday around 10.30 pm. The victim, a resident of suburban Borivali, had sustained serious injuries in the attack on Wednesday and was admitted in the ICU.
According to the police, the two accused brothers, Anil Rajbhar (29) and Gaurav Rajbhar (21), had repeatedly advised their sister against her relationship with the boy. The police had earlier arrested the duo on Wednesday under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for attempt to murder, but after the victim’s death, the police slapped murder charges on the accused. The two brothers will be presented before a local court on Saturday.
According to an MHB police official, the brothers of the victim were upset over her affair and thus slit her throat to save their ‘family honour’. The police said Jyoti had six elder brothers. While five of her brothers are in the flower decoration business, one owns a mobile repair shop. The family stays in Navagaon area of Borivali (west) with their mother. Jyoti was in love with a boy and had conveyed her willingness to marry him to her elder bothers, but this didn’t go well with Anil and Gaurav.
After failing to convince Jyoti to forget the boy, the two brothers took her to an isolated place in Borivali’s IC Colony, where, around 6.20 pm, Anil stabbed her with a knife and Gaurav attacked her with a blade. After committing the crime, Anil immediately visited the MHB police station to surrender and also helped the police in identifying Gaurav. Gaurav, too, was arrested under section 307 of the IPC for attempt to murder.
In the meantime, Jyoti was rushed to Sorana Hospital and was later shifted to Shatabdi Hospital for surgery and then moved to KEM Hospital, where she took her last breath.
