Phase 2 of Monorail rakes in Rs 26 lakh in first week

Mumbai: Phase 2 of the Mumbai Monorail, which is from Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk to Chembur, has completed its first week of operation. With its services raking Rs 26 lakh in six days, the authorities are saying phase 2 is performing up to their expectations. Around 1.50 lakh commuters have traveled via phase 2 so far. The number of regular commuters, however, will only be known after a month.

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) officials are happy with the mono’s results. “We are getting a very good response. Though only four trains are on track, we are seeing good results. It is up to our expectations,” said a senior MMRC officer. Phase 1, which is from Chembur-Wadala, manages to attract 15,000 commuters per day. On newly started Phase 2, nearly 23,000 commuters are seen daily. “The exact number of commuters will be clear only after a month,” said an officer.  

The long-awaited second phase of the monorail started on March 3. Till today, total 1,46,097 have travelled on this route. Through the MMRC has earned Rs 4,83,093 from ticket sales alone, officials did not divulge the number of persons who have applied for monthly passes on phase 2.

Phase 1 was started in 2014 and it was inaugurated by the then-chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. The deadline of Phase 2 had been revised eight times.
