Former KDMC mayor dies of swine flu

The hospital officials said that Patil was admitted to the hospital after she was diagnosed with swine flu.

Last year, from January to October, 995 cases were reported in the city along with 18 deaths, stated civic authorities.

Mumbai: Former mayor of Kalyan-Dombivali, Kalyani Patil (38), died on Tuesday due to swine flu (H1N1 Virus). She was undergoing treatment at the privately run Jupiter Hospital in Thane district since last month.

The hospital officials said that Patil was admitted to the hospital after she was diagnosed with swine flu. Initially, she showed some signs of improvements. But since last three days, her condition deteriorated and she was not responding to the treatment that well.

Chest Physician and head of Pulmonary Medicine at Hospital Dr Alpa Dalal said, “Her condition was critical due to pneumonia and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) affecting her lungs. She was kept in a negative pressure room in the ICU and was on ventilator support throughout her treatment.”

A team of chest specialists, intensive care specialists and nephrologists treated her. Despite all efforts as per medical protocols, she succumbed to her illness due multi-organ failure and septic shock with ARDS.
