Mumbai: Over 1.93 lakh students were honoured and conferred degrees at the annual convocation ceremony of the University of Mumbai (MU) that was conducted on Friday.

Most graduating students — over 1 lakh —  are girls while the total number of boys graduating is 88,995. Also, 40 students, who achieved proficiency in various examinations, were awarded 52 medals.

Nobel-winning biochemist Sir Richard John Roberts conferred the degrees. A large number of students graduating were from the Management faculty — a whopping 1,067,24 — followed by Science and Technology with 54,980 graduates.

Chancellor and state governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao presided over the convocation ceremony. While addressing the students, Mr Roberts spoke about his childhood and the interest he had with subjects like mathematics and chemistry.

“With solving puzzles and playing with maths and chemistry, moving to the science world, I started solving real big-sized puzzles of chemistry,” Mr Roberts said while talking about his theory — Split Genes — for which he received the Nobel Price in 1993.
