Major blaze breaks out at Mankhurd, no casualty

The scrap market of Mankhurd is prone to repeated fire incidents and is nothing new for the residents there.

Mumbai: A huge fire broke out in a scrap shop in the main market area in Mankhurd on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road (GMLR) at around 6 am on Sunday. The fire was brought under control through 17 fire tenders. However, no casualty was reported. P.S. Rahangdale, fire chief said that the exact cause of the fire is still unknown.

Ward officials said that the fire erupted from an unauthorised scrap shop. “An FIR will be lodged against the shop owner,” said a senior ward officer.  

The blaze, which started around 6 am, escalated to level IV in 45 minutes. The fire brigade took almost four hours to douse the fire. “The fire confined to the scrap materials of the shop and destroyed plastic drums, packing material, stock of oil, Bisleri bottles, electric wiring, plywood, wooden furniture, scrap wiring, chemicals, wood and GI partition sheets,” said a senior fire brigade officer.

“The blaze started in the scrap shop around 6 am and spread to adjacent shops,” said fire brigade personnel. The scrap market of Mankhurd is prone to repeated fire incidents and is nothing new for the residents there.
