Inspector held for taking bribe of Rs 25K

The accused officer was identified as Deepak Kharat (48) who was probing the case filed against the cousin of the complainant.

Mumbai: The Mumbai unit of state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested an assistant inspector of police attached with the Govandi police station for taking bribe of Rs 25,000 for not acting against the accused in assualt case registered against him. The accused officer was identified as Deepak Kharat (48) who was probing the case filed against the cousin of the complainant.

The complainant in the case, a transgender, had approached Kharat asking him not to act against his cousin brother against whom the case was registered recently. The said accused was out on bail and the transgender requested Kharat not to act against him, for which he sought for Rs 50,000 bribe for the same.

After negotiation, Kharat accepted to settle the demand at Rs 25,000, ACB officials said. It was then that the transgender lodged a complaint with the ACB, as he had no intention to pay the bribe. The ACB officials verified the complaint and on finding it to be true, laid a trap at the spot. Kharat was apprehended while accepting the bribe.

A case has been registered against Kharat as per the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and he has been arrested for further investigation in the case.
