Mumbai: Acting on a tip-off, the Shivaji Nagar police Thursday caught red-handed a couple from Govandi practising medicine without the mandatory registration and qualifications. The couple was allegedly performing an abortion on a 26-year-old woman.

The police said that the accused were running this illegal network since a couple of days, and used to perform abortions on women beyond 20 weeks’ pregnant which is illegal. The police laid a trap in this particular case where the woman was in her second trimester, which is around 40 weeks’ pregnant. The police sent a decoy to the privately-run Charu clinic located in the Govandi area.

The accused and his assistant were identified as bogus doctor Rohit Yadav (25) and his fake paramedic staff, nurse Shama Shaikh (26). Both gave false assurances to expecting mothers that they would terminate pregnancies beyond 20 weeks and charged them up to one lakh rupees. In this case, the victim was asked to pay '50,000 and the remaining in installments; the victim was in contact with police personnel and blew the lid off the couple’s illegal activities.

Senior police inspector Deepak Pagare said, “These people must be involved in more such cases. We have got their custody till July 15 and are investigating the matter further.”
