2 killed in gas tanker-bus collision

Officials said that the tanker carrying liquid ammonia lost control and collided with the bus killing two passengers on the spot.

Mumbai: Two people were killed and 46 others were injured after a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus collided into a gas tanker on Khopoli-Pen Marg near Gagod village in Raigad district. The accident took place around 8.45 am on Sunday.

Officials said that the tanker carrying liquid ammonia lost control and collided with the bus killing two on the spot. The deceased have been identified as Raghunath Balaram Mhatre, 50, a resident of Bori, and Dinesh Khedekar, 23, a resident of Nanegaon. “The injured have been taken to Pen’s Civil Hospital and the police officials cleared the road traffic,” Raigad police PRO said.

According to the sources, the driver of the oil tanker lost control, but it is still being probed whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or not. The bus was ferrying 66 passengers, including the driver, identified as Madan Gulge and the bus conductor, Aruna Shinde both are recuperating at the hospital and are stable.

Shinde’s maternal uncle Ram Shinde said, “She has sustained injury to spinal cord, she is out of danger but will take some time for her recuperation.”

Twenty passengers were discharged from the hospital after primary medical treatment.
