Makers urge govt to come up with better policies
Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce and Industry has claimed that several units are on the verge of closure due to absence of basic packaging material.
Mumbai: Plastic manufacturers have demanded that the state government focus on coming up with better policies to treat and recycle plastic waste rather than shutting down their business. Several stakeholders gathered on Thursday to discuss why plastic was an unavoidable commodity which provided advantages such as longer shelf-life and durability.
The Bombay Grain Dealers’ Association, Indian Bakers’ Association and Clothing Manufacturers’ Association of India have all alleged that the ban on plastic bags has derailed their production, packaging and supply schedules.
The Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce and Industry has claimed that several units are on the verge of closure due to absence of basic packaging material, and has sought a waiver on the ban from environment minister Ramdas Kadam, till such time alternatives are identified and made available.
During the press conference on Thursday, the panelists discussed that plastic bags were superior to paper and cloth bags and substantially less harmful for the environment.
