Mumbai likely to see heatwaves from today

Mumbai: Mumbai is expected to witness heatwaves from April 13, as the temperature is likely to increase up to 38 degrees Celsius. Since Thursday, various weather stations of state have been recording day temperatures of above 40 degrees Celsius with the highest at Chandrapur at 45.2 degree Celsius.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the sweltering weather can be attributed to the hot north-westerly winds.

Mumbai recorded a maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius over the last 24 hours since Thursday, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 24.2 degree Celsius.

“The hotter north-westerly winds are flowing from Rajasthan and Gujarat areas. As such, the maximum temperature could increase in Mumbai significantly,” said an IMD official.

According to Skymet Weather, a private weather forecast agency, an anticyclone is likely to form over the north Arabian Sea, which would induce warm winds over the north-western parts of the country.

“Slowly and steadily, these warm weather conditions would also cover coastal parts of the state as well. The cities of Mumbai, Thane, Dahanu and Malegaon will see a change in wind direction, and north-easterly hot winds will blow over the region. Thus, temperatures will see an increase over these areas. Thus, heat wave-like conditions will make an appearance over central Maharashtra,” read the report.

As such, in the next two to three days, Mumbai will see temperatures soaring to 38 degree Celsius along with high humidity. However, the mercury over the city is likely to dip from April 16, given the possibility of a trough passing over the state.

Apart from Mumbai, cities like Akola, Amravati and Nagpur recorded 44.3, 44.2 and 43.5 degree Celsius, respectively, on Thursday.
