Maximum students show inclination for commerce

Mumbai: The state education department conducted a survey of all class X state board students to find their preferred field of interest. The survey was titled “kal chachani” and 1,736,104 students were put to the test to find out their inclination towards seven generally available fields such as arts, commerce, technical, health sciences, uniformed services, agriculture and fine arts.

The survey found that the maximum number of students showed an inclination for commerce.

Fine arts was the second most popular after commerce, which was followed by uniformed services, agriculture, arts, health sciences with technical featuring the last.

The test was conducted in February in all state board schools where question papers had multiple choice questions.

There were 140 questions from all the aforementioned fields. The one-hour test was to make students aware of their field of interest which according to the department will help them choose their future education.

According to the department, “kal chachani” helps students make informed career choices. The MHRD has recognised the project as a best practice for students.

A similar survey was conducted last year too where fine arts emerged as the most popular field.

The government of Maharashtra started kal chachani in 2016 and according to state education minister Vinod Tawde, Maharashtra is the first state to bring such a program for students.

Mr Tawde said, “Recently, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Bihar and Gujarat, too, have initiated this project for students drawing inspiration from us.”
