15-year-old drowns in South Mumbai
The coast guard rushed him to the GT Hospital where he was declared dead.
Mumbai: A 15-year-old teenager drowned in the sea near Priyadarshani Park in south Mumbai where he had gone for a swim with a relative on Sunday noon. The deceased, Fahim Ahmed Shaikh, had come to visit the city and had gone for sightseeing when he decided to take a dip in the sea with a cousin, following which he drowned due to high tide. Fahim was from Uttar Pradesh and was visiting a relative in Dharavi. The Malabar Hill police station has registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in this case.
The Coast Guard at the sea near Malabar Hills were alerted about the drowning incident and within 10 minutes, they deployed a helicopter for the ‘search and rescue’ operation along with divers to save the two persons. The helicopter searched the area and lowered their diver to save Fahim and his cousin, but managed to save only one, while Fahim’s body was later recovered from the sea.
The coast guard rushed him to the GT Hospital where he was declared dead. Fahim's body was later handed over to the family, while his parents are likely to arrive in the city by Monday morning.
The Indian Coast Guard has appealed to the people not to venture into sea during prevailing monsoon as high waves can easily sweep anyone away from shoreline posing a risk to life and safety.
