Mumbai sees heavy showers, chaos on Monday evening

Mumbai: Most parts of Mumbai, especially western, eastern and central suburbs, received heavy showers late on Monday evening for over an hour, though they did not affect the operations of suburban trains.

While areas like Dadar and Bandra saw moderate rainfall on Monday evening, a tree fell on the main road near SV Road in Malad, partly destroying an auto-rickshaw parked on the road. However there was no casualties. The uprooting of the tree delayed the movement of traffic in the area. In a similar incident, trees were uprooted at Kabootarkhana in Dadar (west) and Wadala, resulting in traffic slowdown. Another tree was uprooted at Goregaon area in the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport bus route from St Pious College to Nagri Nivara.

The rains led to water-logging at Khodadad Circle, Dadar (east). All traffic to and from Goregaon (east) came to a complete standstill owing to the rains. Heavy traffic was also seen from King’s Circle to Matunga and from Sion to Dharavi.

Meanwhile Bhayander, Vasai, Virar, Kurla, Wadala and Borivali received ample rainfall.

Many residents were sending updates about the downpour and the status of traffic among their relatives and friends via texts and social media apps.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre of Mumbai, its Colaba station received 94 mm rainfall till 8.30 am on Monday while its Santa Cruz station received 70.6 mm. On Tuesday, the city and suburbs are expected to see cloudy skies with moderate rain. Heavy rains are likely to occur in some areas.

On Sunday, the maximum and minimum temperature of Mumbai was 32 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius — in Santa Cruz, 31.9 and 25.5 degrees and in Colaba 31 degrees and 24.5 degrees respectively. Rainfall was also seen in Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Konkan and Goa.
