Societies reap benefits of self-redevelopment
Mhada has so far cleared six proposals: Officials
Mumbai: A society in Pant Nagar area of Ghatkopar has proposed the construction of an 18-storey tower after getting a nod for self-redevelopment from the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada). Similarly, around half-a-dozen societies have prepared elaborate plans for the redevelopment. The housing societies appoint their own project management consultants, architects and contractors to execute the project.
The Mhada officials revealed that around six proposals have been passed so far, three are pending to be cleared. Among the first ones to get the nod for self-redevelopment is the Sai Dham society in Pant Nagar area of Ghatkopar east. The ground-plus-three storey structure will be redeveloped into an 18-storey tower. Mhada took around 6-7 months to pass the proposal.
“We received our offer letter from the bank just a week ago and are preparing to move after Diwali. Currently we stay in houses measuring up to 323 sq ft, however after redevelopment each tenant will get two flats 500 fq. ft, each,” said Arun Pawar, a resident of the society.
“The extra space and flats will help the senior citizens of the society to earn a living by renting out a flat,” Mr Pawar added further.
Further, the society will get a podium parking after redevelopment.
Similarly, Chembur-based Chitra Co-Operative housing society has received a nod from the authority and each tenant will get 1,300 sq ft as against the present flat area of 400 sq ft.
Recently, after acquiring the planning authority status, the societies can now apply for self-redevelopment permissions with Mhada themselves since a new cell has been formed for the same.
Experts cite that since it’s a new concept, the housing societies are waiting for the applied ones to complete their process, to get the gist of the entire procedure. Additionally, tenants are also facing trouble due to the bribe business in the market.
