AAI seeks proclamation against Mallya in Rs 100 crore cheque bouncing cases

Mumbai: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Thursday filed an application before a magistrate court in suburban Andheri and sought issuance of a proclamation against liquor baron and UB Group chairman Vijay Mallya in connection with two cases of cheque bouncing amounting to over Rs 100 crore.

Advocates Anil Kathuria and Neeraj Aarora on behalf of AAI said that the application was filed against Mallya’s Kingfisher Airlines Ltd and others as the bounced cheques involved a total amount of Rs 100 crore.

The lawyers said that earlier, while hearing AAI on the cheque bouncing cases against Mallya, the court had directed him to appear before it on July 16, 2016, failing which, it had warned that a warrant would be issued against him.

The court had even issued a non-bailable warrant when Mallya did not appear before it on the said date. However, it could not be executed as Mallya had already left the country.

The lawyers argued before the court that in these circumstances, a proclamation should be issued against Mallya in the case. They argued that cases of the AAI could not be kept pending indefinitely on account of non-appearance of the fugitive businessman.

After hearing the arguments, the court adjourned hearing on the application till February next year for arguments.
