Schools start tasks for parents, teachers

MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) education department has initiated School Management Committee (SMC) in the civic schools to integrate parents, principal and teachers in order to bring the best out of the students.

As per the department officials, the meetings under SMC is conducted once every month in the school where parents come and interact with teachers to get regular updates on their wards performance in school.

Mahesh Palkar, BMC education officer while talking to The Asian Age stated, “This is also an important part of the school education. Though parents are not very educated, they are indeed very curious and excited to know about their childs performance in the school. During the SMC meeting, teachers tend to point out certain things about the students to make sure, the parents also complete their responsibility towards the children.”

He added, “It is a myth that school should be providing everything to the students. The truth is that nobody can push the entire responsibility of development on the school. Instead, it should be a cooperative programme. Our teachers, as per the requirement of the students, ask the parents to perform certain tasks at home. Simultaneously, parents too can give their opinion regarding the child to the teacher or the principal.”

Several civic run schools have also initiated an activity programme, which involves both parents and teachers in the school with their children.

“Children at their age are quite sensitive yet aware of their surroundings. They tend to grasps things quickly than adults. Activities like team management, interaction, self-awareness, environment-friendly initiatives, etc, create a greater impact on children and the parents who are new to these things,” Vaishali Chavan, a teacher stated.
