Mumbai: A junior intelligence officer attached to the immigration department at the Mumbai International Airport allegedly committed suicide Monday over unknown reasons. Abhishay Babu jumped off the airport building and was found in a pool of blood at the parking lot on level 4, officials said.
The incident came to light after the security personnel heard a loud thud and rushed to check what had crashed. Some people also allegedly witnessed the jump, the police said. Babu was rushed to a nearby hospital but he had succumbed to his injuries before he could be administered any treatment.
The Sahar police station began investigation into the suicide that took place around 2.45pm but there is no clarity on why Babu took the extreme step. The police said that it is verifying the sequence of incidents minutes before Babu’s suicide. The police will now verify call details and record the statements of his colleagues and family members to ascertain the motive.
“Several angles will be probed including the health issues he had been grappling with. The family will be contacted after the mourning while the investigation progresses,” said a police officer.
Babu was promoted early in January and posted in Mumbai. Other details pertaining to his employment are being gathered from the immigration department. The process of recording the statements of his colleagues has begun, officials said.
The police is also scanning CCTV camera foot-age of the office as part of the ongoing suicide investigation. An ADR has been filed in connection with the incident.
