Mumbai: Maharashtra senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis Thursday slammed the Shiv Sena over its “helplessness” with regard to remaining in power in the state to the extent of ignoring attacks by its new ally, the Congress, on freedom fighter (late) Veer Savarkar.

Mr Fadnavis also demanded a ban on the Marathi magazine “Shidori” in which anti-Savarkar articles have appeared.

Mr Fadnavis told reporters that the Maharashtra Congress publishes Shidori, which has allegedly described late Savarkar as an apologist and rapist.

“These references are part of two separate articles published in the magazine. I wonder how much the Sena is helpless for power that its ally is defaming the Sena’s ideologue, Savarkar,” the senior BJP leader said. The magazine should be banned and the Congress should apologise for the malicious content in the magazine against Savarkar, he added.

In a series of tweets, Mr Fadnavis said, “The Congress is continuously insulting our great personalities. In the recent issue of Shidori, Maharashtra Congress’s mouthpiece, two articles got published on Savarkar. In the first, they termed him as ‘Mafiveer’ and in the other, a ‘rapist’.”

He also said that both these articles show the dirty mentality of the Congress party. Reminding the Sena about its own remark on Savarkar, the BJP leader said that earlier, the Sena had said that this dirt in Madhya Pradesh would not come to Maharashtra.

“Does the Sena agree with the articles? We demand an apology from the Congress Party, withdraw the book and the state government should ban the book (sic),” he asserted. The Sena should answer how low it is willing to go for the sake of power,” he asked. Mr Fadnavis further said, “If the state government is not going to take any action on this book, we will take strong steps to maintain the dignity of our national heroes.”
