MBMC bags award for innovation
MBMC produces around 1.5 tonnes of compost per month from an average of 50 kg Nirmalaya it receives every day.
Mumbai: The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has bagged the prestigious Skoch Order of Merit Award for successfully implementing green manure conversion by optimising Nirmalaya (floral offerings).
In a small but significant step to turn Nirmalaya into a life-promoting substance, the MBMC has initiated a mini vermi-compost project at the Jesal Park waterfront in Bhayandar (east), which had become a favourite destination to dump the floral remains.
Designed by an inhouse team comprising sanitary inspectors and conservancy workers, the plant converts floral waste into organic manure. As per traditions, ritual offerings need to be immersed in a water body. However, realising that the extensive use of plastic bags along with Nirmalya had turned into a major cause of water pollution, the MBMC mooted the project to dispose the offerings in a graceful, eco-friendly and above all productive manner.
After segregating the Nirmalaya at source, the remains are treated in the special vermicomposting pits. MBMC produces around 1.5 tonnes of compost per month from an average of 50 kg Nirmalaya it receives every day.
